What It Is
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is the online system the Government of Canada uses to manage applications for permanent residence under several federal skilled-worker programs. Rather than a "first come, first served" line, it works as a pool: candidates are ranked, and the highest-scoring profiles are periodically invited to apply.
Express Entry manages three main federal programs — generally aimed at skilled workers with foreign experience, skilled workers with Canadian experience, and certain skilled trades. Each has its own eligibility requirements, which you can confirm on the official IRCC website.
The Points System
Understanding the CRS score
Candidates in the Express Entry pool receive a score under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). In general terms, points are awarded for factors such as:
- Age — with peak points typically in the younger adult range.
- Education — your level of schooling and credentials.
- Work experience — skilled work history, in Canada and abroad.
- Language ability — results from approved English and/or French tests.
- Other factors — such as a spouse's profile or certain connections to Canada.
The minimum score needed changes from draw to draw, so there's no single fixed number. The official IRCC site publishes the results of each round of invitations.
Provinces & Territories
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Most Canadian provinces and territories run their own immigration streams through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). These let a province nominate candidates who meet its specific economic or labour-market needs.
A provincial nomination is valuable: for candidates in the Express Entry pool, an eligible nomination adds a substantial number of CRS points, which significantly improves the chances of receiving an invitation. Each province sets its own streams and criteria, so the right fit depends on your profile and where you'd like to settle. Check both the province's official immigration site and IRCC for details.
